Your solar assessment

Building type Free solar assessment

What type of building do you want solar panels on?

Two minutes, nine questions. We model buying, hire purchase, a fully funded PPA and a supplier switch against your own site.

Roof type The roof

What type of roof does the building have?

Most commercial roofs can take panels. The type changes the fixing system, not whether solar works.

Ownership The premises

Does your business own the building or lease it?

This decides which funding routes are open. Leaseholders can still go solar with the landlord's consent.

Monthly electricity spend Your electricity

How much does your business spend on electricity each month?

A ballpark is fine. Your assessment uses your actual bills or half-hourly data.

Energy switching Cut the bill now

Would you like us to find you a cheaper energy deal?

Switching could cut your bill by up to 40% whilst your solar is designed. It depends on your current contract.

How to pay for solar Three ways to pay

How would you prefer to pay for solar?

We model every route either way. This tells us which to lead with.

Building location Locate your roof

What is the postcode of the building?

We use the location to pinpoint your roof for the survey.

Your details Building located

What are your name and business name?

Your proposal is written for the business, so we will address it to you and your company.

Solar panels covering the roof of a cattle shed on a UK farm
Panels on a cattle shed roof, close to where the power is used

Why farm buildings suit solar.

  • Big roofs, already built. Cattle sheds, grain stores and machinery barns have large, unshaded roofs.
  • Power when the farm uses it. Cold stores, dairy cooling, ventilation and grain drying draw power in daylight, when the panels generate.
  • Tax relief on the cost. Solar counts as plant and machinery, so it can qualify for the Annual Investment Allowance. Your accountant confirms what you can claim.
  • Paid for what you export. Power you do not use on the farm can be sold to an energy supplier through the Smart Export Guarantee.

FAQs

Quick answers for farms

Are there grants for solar panels on farms?

Defra’s Farming Investment Fund has paid towards rooftop solar on farm buildings in past rounds, but rounds open and close. We check what is open for your postcode as part of your assessment, and never quote a grant until it is confirmed.

Do we need planning permission?

Usually not for panels on a farm building roof, which is permitted development in England and Scotland. Larger systems in England need the council’s prior approval, listed buildings are excluded, and ground-mounted arrays do need planning permission. Solar4Business confirms what applies at survey.

What if the barn roof is old or fibre cement?

The survey checks the structure and the sheeting before anything is designed. If one roof is not suitable, another building or a ground-mounted array may be.

We are tenant farmers. Can we still go ahead?

Owner-occupiers can use any route. Tenants usually need the landlord’s consent for solar, and can have their electricity contract reviewed straight away.

How can you cut the bill before solar goes in?

We review your current electricity contract against the tariffs available to your business. If a better deal saves money, we move you whilst your solar is designed. The saving depends on your contract and any exit fees.
