If you’re a commercial business of any kind with a car park that is frequently full of employees or customers, then EV chargers at your premises is a great idea. That applies to a whole host of businesses, including but not limited to:
Essentially, if your business is a destination, then having commercial EV chargers on site just makes sense. It makes you look like a forward-thinking business who puts their employees and customers first, and it shows that you’re a business that’s committed to a greener future.
And whilst those are great benefits, commercial EV chargers at your commercial premises can bring a range of other benefits your way too!
It’s no secret that commercial businesses with EV charging points will start to make a name for themselves as a business who cares about their customers and what they’re driving. As more and more people switch to electric vehicles, you’ll be making your premises a go-to spot when they need to charge their cars. More people at your business means more footfall, and ultimately more money for you.
Not only do you earn more money from the increased footfall, but lots of electric vehicle owners are used to paying for the use of EV charging points whilst at a commercial premises. You can set your own tariffs and charge per kWh/hr session, and make a little money on every charge.
Even if money isn’t your main motivator and customers aren’t something you deal with directly, your employees will be. If you own a warehouse, for example, you won’t necessarily have customers at your site, but you will have visitors and employees with electric vehicles. Introducing commercial EV charging points at your place of work can increase staff morale and impress visitors.
Back to customers again. If you do have customers on site a lot, you can make your business stand out as a place for those with electric vehicles to come. Maybe they can charge their car whilst they look around your shopping centre, or charge up whilst dining with you at your restaurant. The point is, there’s a real demand for electric vehicle charging points, and you can be the one that provides it to your customers, and it could keep them coming back for more.
Customers, clients, and fellow businesses are looking for businesses to have a green mindset before they align themselves with them nowadays, and showing your commitment to the future of the UK by providing EV charging points will put your business in a good light.
And now it’s easier than ever to pay for commercial EV chargers at your business premises. Some companies offer finance options, where you lease commercial charge points each month, with no upfront cost. If you have the capital, you can pay outright, too. And if neither of those options look appealing to you, then you could qualify for funding with a few different grant schemes running in the UK…
There are a few different grants available in the UK for commercial EV chargers (you can read about all of them at the gov website here), but the main two that will concern most businesses are:
This grant is available to small-to-medium sized businesses in the UK and it covers up to 75% of the cost of installed commercial EV charger infrastructure and the charge points themselves. It offers:
The limit of the grant is £15,000, but this can cover most of the cost.
In order to apply your business must have no more than 249 employees, AND must be a UK registered company, charity, or public sector organisation.
This scheme is for workplaces and the grant can cover up to 75% of the cost of purchase and installation of EV charge points, but it’s capped at:
Yes! But they must cover separate charge points installed. That means you can’t claim £350 for the cost of installing a charge point socket under the EV Infrastructure Grant for Staff and Fleets and £350 under the Workplace Charging Scheme for the same charge point. If you attempt it, it may be viewed as fraud.

All savings are based upon a solar generation yield of 850kWh/kWp installed per annum, with usage of 71.43% of solar energy generated, assuming a 35p/kWh electricity import rate. Savings may change year on year dependent upon weather conditions, energy prices and system degradation in line with warrantied output.
It varies depending on the commercial EV charge points you opt for, but it can typically cost between £1000 and £1500 per charge point.
However, it is estimated that you can earn around £200 per year for charging customers to use your new charge point – and that’s a low estimate where only 1 person uses your EV charger each day, Monday to Friday. In this extreme case, you would still pay back the entire cost in 6 years (and much sooner with a government grant and multiple users per day, of course). So whilst the cost may seem high, commercial EV charge points will eventually pay for themselves.

That depends on the size of your business and how often you think electric vehicles will treat your car park as a destination. Since the Workplace Charging Scheme has a cap at 40 charge points, this might be a good limit to set yourself too, for now.
You can always install more later if there’s enough demand.
On average it takes around 2 hours to install 1 charge point. Work out how many charge points you need, and allow 2 hours for each one, plus a little extra for infrastructure work to figure out how long installers will be on site.
In most cases, commercial EV charge points will last for around 10 years, but this may be shorter or longer depending on maintenance and how well cared for they are.
